Remembering Bill Abom

Wednesday 3 December 2025

Mandate was deeply saddened to learn of the death of former Lead Organiser Bill Abom, who devoted himself to the union and its members from 2014 to 2021. During his time at Mandate, Bill played a crucial role organising and inspiring workers in the retail sector to protect and improve their conditions at work.

Bill was central to devising worker-led campaign strategies in companies such as Dunnes Stores, Tesco, Lloyds Pharmacy and many more. He believed the role of a union organiser was to empower and inspire workers to stand up for what is fair and just – and he did this at every opportunity with passion and determination.

Bill’s legacy extends far beyond his time at Mandate, having also served as co-Director of the Migrant Rights Centre, among many other endeavours in the cause of justice and fairness throughout his lifetime.

Bill will be missed by his former colleagues at Mandate and the many members who he worked closely with over the years. His contribution to improving the lives of working people in Ireland will never be forgotten.

Mandate offers condolences to Bill’s family and many friends and colleagues during this difficult time
