Join us at the UCD Geary Institute to discuss the future of Ireland’s economy, current challenges to our economic model, and opportunities ahead, with a keynote address by Mr Paul Sweeney.

Following introductory remarks by Professor Karl Whelan, School of Economics, UCD, Mr Paul Sweeney will make a 20-minute presentation based on his analysis of the economy. The seminar is to mark the occasion of Paul receiving an honorary doctorate from UCD in recognition of his life’s work on economics on Friday 5th December. Mr Oisín Gilmore (Senior Economist, TASC) will respond. Other speakers TBC. The presentations will be followed by questions and answers with the audience.
The seminar will be followed by a wine reception, hosted by the UCD Geary Institute for Public Policy.
Mr Paul Sweeney is the author of five books on economics, including Ireland’s Economic Success: Reasons and Lessons and The Celtic Tiger: Ireland’s Economic Miracle Explained, as well as well over 100 other articles, pamphlets and book chapters, spanning the period 1981 to present. Paul is former Chief Economist of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. He also provided considerable service to the state through membership of various state boards and committees. Paul was President of the Statistical and Social Inquiry Society of Ireland, former member of the Economic Committee of the ETUC, a member of the National Competitiveness Council of Ireland, the National Statistics Board, the ESB, the Trade Union Advisory Committee to the OECD, and other bodies. Paul is currently a board member of TASC, where he has also authored dozens of articles on the website Progressive Economy @ TASC(https://www.tasc.ie/blog/). Through his work, Paul has made a lasting contribution to the economic model that underpins Ireland’s modernisation and prosperity, the benefits of which we enjoy today.
