Mandate is supporting the Unity and Hope rally taking place this Saturday, 23rd November 2024 at 1pm on O’Connell Street, Dublin 1.
The trade union movement is built on the simple idea of uniting working people to stand stronger together, both at home and abroad. We believe that people, no matter who they are or where they were born, should have a decent job that pays well, a safe, warm, affordable home and care when they’re sick.
As a movement, we fight for bold solutions to the challenges faced by working communities. In Ireland, 1 in 5 workers is a citizen of another country; many are our members who care for our loved ones and the sick, build our homes, drive us to work and school, pick, pack and put food on our tables. Our communities are kept going by people who choose to make Ireland home.
But a small number of violent extremist and ideologically committed far right actors, have been organising to stoke hate, fear and violence, targeting people at work in libraries, schools, on our buses and trains, and shops.
They benefit by making us afraid of each other, and they distract by scapegoating and turning us against each other. As a movement of people working in Ireland, we believe that everyone deserves to feel safe in their place of work and their communities, no matter where they were born or the colour of their skin.
It is only through unity and hope that we can ensure those in power deliver for everyone in our communities, no exceptions.
Congress General Secretary, Owen Reidy called;
“Now, more than ever, we need to come together. This rally is a call to all who believe in building a society rooted in unity, respect, hope and decent, secure jobs, affordable homes, and better GP and hospital care. As a movement we hold those in power responsible for delivering what we all need to thrive. That means policy decisions that deliver for working people, not the wealthy few.
It’s a reminder that every person who lives and works here—regardless of where they come from—is part of our community and deserves to feel safe and valued.
We stand up against those who seek to divide us and spread hate in our communities and workplaces. Where they sow division, we stand for unity.
I am calling for those in the trade union movement to ensure a strong presence at this rally, and for all unions to stand together in solidarity. Join us as we rally to show our strength, unity and power.”
I am asking those in the trade union movement to ensure we have a strong presence of activists from unions across our movement at this rally, to show that all unions stand together in solidarity. Together, let us demonstrate that compassion and unity are stronger than division and hatred. Join us as we rally for a future of inclusion, strength, and unwavering unity.”
