Mandate Trade Union was deeply shocked and saddened by the announcement of the passing of Macdara Doyle, Campaigns Officer for the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, over the weekend.
Macdara was a friend to Mandate and wrote for our publications on numerous occasions over the last 35 years.
As coordinator of communications for Congress, Macdara helped to upskill hundreds of trade union activists and staff through communications training courses. His knowledge of the media was second to none, and he helped our movement to shape progress in Irish society – including the marriage equality referendum and the Repeal the 8th campaign.
He was always available to speak at events, including a recent Mandate Youth event where he presented to young members of Mandate the demands of the Raise the Roof campaign, along with the need for a radical change in housing policy in Ireland.
Macdara was a solid supporter of Mandate members during their campaigns, whether for changes to legislation, or in support of industrial action. He fought for equality and social justice all his adult life and he has left a legacy to be proud of.
Macdara will be greatly missed by the entire trade union movement and wider civil society.
Mandate would like to extend our sincere condolences to Macdara’s wife, children, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.
