UNI GLOBAL CALLS ON TRADE UNIONISTS TO MARK INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST HOMOPHOBIA, BIPHOBIA AND TRANSPHOBIA ON WEDNESDAY, 17 MAY

Monday 15 May 2023

This Wednesday, 17th of May we observe IDAHOBIT, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.

In a world that is increasingly seeing backlash to the advancement of LGBTI rights in the world, trade unions must stand in solidarity with our own LGBTI members and the broader LGBTI community.

Our themes for this year are “solidarity: everyone belongs in our union” and “LGBTphobia is not trade union value”.

We are asking our affiliates and colleagues all over the world to join us in marking this day using the action kit (available in 25 languages), created by the Global Unions LGBTI Workers project, to support your participation.

  1. Encourage your activists and members to take action. Distribute the action kit as soon as possible. You can distribute this widely or target it to staff, women’s and young workers committees, and LGBTI workers networks.
  2. Participate in the action by:

       –      Promote our 17 May webinar with your membership (details in action kit).

       –      Be active on social media on 17 May. Use the hashtags and messaging in the action kit. Post and amplify your GUF’s posts and make sure to tag (@uniequalopportunities or @uniglobalunion)  and @lgbtiworkers.
