Monica Horan, Mandate Shop Steward in Marks & Spencer, Clarion, is set to star in an upcoming play about the 1913 Lockout.
The play, entitled, The Risen People, was written by James Plunket back in 1958 and was the inspiration for his hugely successful book, Strumpet City. This version of the play is directed by Sheila Sheridan and is an East Wall PEG Drama and Variety Group Production.
The Risen People is a story that depicts the struggle of ordinary Dubliners during the 1913 Dublin Lockout.
Monica, who joined Mandate fourteen years ago and has been a Shop Steward for ten of those years, says she is exhausted from practicing for the play.
“We started preparing for the play back in April and it’s been tough, but I know it’s going to be worth it. I’m really excited but also a bit nervous.
“I’m delighted to be starring in this play on such in such an important year. 100 years after the 1913 Lockout, ordinary workers are still struggling with their bosses throughout Ireland.
“This play is an important part of all our history and I hope that we get a lot of trade unionists coming along. I’d love to see as many Mandate Trade Union members in attendance as possible too.
The play takes place in the Sean O’Casey Theatre, St Mary’s Road, Eastwall, Dublin 3 and runs from Tuesday, 20th August – Saturday, 24th August and then from Tuesday, 27th August – Saturday, 31st August 2013.
