Mandate meets with Superquinn management to try and save jobs

Monday 10 January 2011

Superquinn confirmed last week that it intends to close its store in Naas, Co Kildare with the potential loss of 110 jobs on February 5th after the landlord Primark, which trades as Penneys, demanded possession. Mandate representatives last week met with members affected by the decision. The meeting was extremely well attended and lasted for approximately two hours. Staff present expressed their deep disappointment with the recent development and conveyed their concern about what future job prospects existed within the locality. However, they were much encouraged by the statement issued by the company setting out how attempts will be made to redeploy Naas employees within other branches of the retailing operation. Gerry Light stated that the meeting had been extremely constructive and had helped form a very clear framework for vital negotiations with Superquinn management due to begin on Tuesday, 11th January. At the forefront of Mandate negotiators minds will be how to ensure job transfers are maximised and job losses kept to a minimum.
