Workers begin protest at Spawell Pub and Nightclub
Tuesday 18 August 2009
Mandate Trade Union members in the Spawell Pub and Nightclub began a protest at 9am today outside the Spawell complex. The workers were made redundant last week with no redundancy money and with approximately one month’s wages owed to each of the staff members.
CB Taverns, trading as the Spawell Licenced Premises, ceased trading on Monday, 10 August 2009 with the loss of 32 jobs. The company has currently not paid staff members all of the wages outstanding to them including two weeks wages, holiday pay and wages for three days worked last week. The company has also not indicated to Mandate whether they would be going into liquidation.
Mandate’s Divisional Organiser, Eddie Cassidy said: “This protest has a number of aims including raising awareness of the predicament these workers have been put in by their unscrupulous employer. We’re hoping we can achieve payment for the work that the guys have already completed and also some compensation in terms of redundancy payments.
“A lot of our members here have families and they are heavily reliant on the income they received from their jobs in the Spawell Pub and Nightclub. They have been treated appalling and now not only do they have to worry about where their next pay check is coming from, they also have to worry about whether or not they’ll receive their last one,” said Mr Cassidy.
Mandate says that the protest which began at 9am this morning will continue until 9pm tonight. Over twenty workers are involved in the protest which has received a lot of support from local politicians who have attended the picket action.
