Mandate Trade Union supports Sinn Féin’s bill to Protect Workers

Tuesday 1 May 2012

Mandate Trade Union has expressed its full support for Sinn Féin’s Protection of Employees Bill 2012, which was launched on the 1st of May at Leinster House. The bill hopes to address the increasing difficulties that workers face in obtaining their entitlements after being made redundant.

The union’s General Secretary John Douglas said the bill has Mandate’s complete backing. He continued: “the bill is very much welcomed by Mandate, as recently unemployed workers are finding it harder and harder to get the benefits that they are entitled too.”

Douglas commented that the core of this bill was to enhance workers rights and speed up claims, which Mandate feels, is needed in light of recent events. “Lately we have seen former workers being denied their rights after being made redundant, worrying cases like Vita Cortex, Game and La Senza are becoming all too common. The government needs to protect workers and this bill is a step in the right direction”
